Walter Becker was born on February 20, 1950, in Queens, New York. He developed an early interest in music, influenced by the jazz and rock sounds of the 1960s. Becker's musical journey began in earnest when he attended Bard College, where he met his lifelong collaborator, Donald Fagen. The duo initially played in various bands before forming their seminal project, Steely Dan, in the early 1970s. Becker's intricate guitar work and songwriting skills quickly became essential to the band's identity, as they crafted a sound that blended rock, jazz, and pop, laying the groundwork for their future successes. Becker and Fagen's partnership flourished through their pioneering band Steely Dan, debuting with the album 'Can’t Buy a Thrill' in 1972.
