Biography

Maynard James Keenan was born April 17, 1964, in Ravenna, Ohio. Raised with a strong interest in performance and the arts, he pursued theater and visual art before music took center stage. His early career was rooted in the West Coast rock and underground scenes as he moved to California in the late 1980s to pursue music full time. In Los Angeles and the surrounding scene, Keenan refined a vocal approach that could scorch with intensity or float with melody, a versatility that would become a hallmark of Tool and his other projects. The rise of Tool in the early 1990s culminated in the release of the debut EP Opiate in 1992, which introduced his cavernous, expressive baritone to a rapidly evolving metal and alternative audience.
