Frank Anthony Iero, born October 31, 1981, in Belleville, New Jersey, is an American guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist whose restless career has traced the shifting contours of punk- and emo-inflected rock from the early 2000s onward. He picked up the guitar in his early teens, drawn to the raw energy of punk and the melodic ambition of 1990s alternative rock, and spent his youth playing in local New Jersey outfits. By the late 1990s he had honed a crisp, aggressive rhythm approach that could carry both propulsive punk tempos and moodier, hook-laden passages. A friend introduced him to My Chemical Romance, and he joined the New Jersey-based band in 2001 as a second guitarist, helping to anchor a sound that balanced theatrical ambition with combustible live energy. His entry marked the beginning of a transcontinental touring arc and a prolific, multi-genre body of work. With My Chemical Romance, Iero helped steer one of the defining acts of the 2000s alternative scene.
