Biography

Aaron Weaver was born in 1987 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in a household where rhythm was a heartbeat. He got his first drum kit at age eight and spent hours tracking along to Slayer, Meshuggah, and Rush, discovering a passion for endurance, speed, and groove that would become his calling. By his teens he was gigging with local metal acts and forming Thunderforge with a circle of friends who shared a love of heavy riffs and complex tempos. Weaver absorbed the language of metal drumming from a range of catalysts: Dave Lombardo's feral blast bursts, Neil Peart's compositional clarity, and Mike Portnoy's evolving hybrid approach. He trained through rudiments, polyrhythms, and dynamic control, building a toolkit that could anchor explosive riff sections while threading melodic lines through the kit. As the drummer for Thunderforge, Weaver helped push the band from basement jams to festival stages with a fierce, machine-like precision. Thunderforge released Shatteredforge in 2006 and Ironbound Dawn in 2008, touring through Europe and the United States and earning a reputation for relentless tempos and cinematic percussion. A breakthrough moment came during the Wintermetal Festival in Prague, where their live show landed them on national metal media and earned Weaver a nod for his drum work. After Thunderforge, Weaver joined Void Requiem, releasing Nullsight in 2011, Dreadnought in 2014, and The Silent Choir in 2016. Those records expanded his palette with orchestral textures, odd-meter sections, and collaborations with guest vocalists and guitarists. Notable collaborations included Elena Kostova and guitarist Chris Kessler on Dreadnought and The Silent Choir. In 2017 he formed Ascendant Serpent, a project dedicated to concept albums and narrative-scale metal, releasing Spectral Engine in 2019 featuring guest guitarist Yuka Sato and Horizon of Ashes in 2022, followed by Emberfall in 2024. The band tours internationally, often pairing dense, progressive material with stripped-down live shows that emphasize the rhythm section. Musically, Weaver has become known for a signature blend of power and precision. His playing is defined by heavy double-bass propulsion, tight kick patterns, and crisp snare tone that knife through dense guitar cores. He deploys polyrhythms and odd meters to drive concept-driven arrangements, weaving melodic fills into machine-like grooves. On gear, he favors Pearl Masters Custom drums with Zildjian K Custom and A Custom cymbals, a compact but expansive kit that can punch through layered guitars while remaining articulate in quieter sections. His pedal setup includes DW 9002 pedals for rapid response, and his live mic choices—Shure SM57 and Shure SM58—ensure every hit and vocal cue lands with authority. In the studio, he has experimented with tuned acoustics and sample layering to expand the tonal palette without sacrificing dynamics. Beyond the studio and the stage, Weaver's influence on metal drumming rests on his willingness to blend brutality with narrative intent. His work with Ascendant Serpent and his earlier bands has inspired younger drummers to push technical boundaries while maintaining groove and musical purpose.
