Vinnie Paul Abbott, born March 11, 1964, was a Texas based drummer and a founding member of Pantera. He started playing drums as a teenager and formed Pantera with his brother Darrell Abbott, who would later be known as Dimebag Darrell, in the early 1980s. The band's early records, including Metal Magic (1983) and Power Metal (1988), fused speed metal chops with a Southern inflected swagger. As the 1980s closed, Pantera sharpened their approach into heavier, groove oriented metal, a transition that culminated in Cowboys from Hell (1990). On the records and on stage, Vinnie Paul’s forceful, precise drumming anchored Dimebag Darrell’s down tuned riffs and set the template for a new wave of American metal.
