Biography

Tony Allen, a legendary Nigerian drummer and one of the key figures in the development of the Afrobeat genre, was born on July 12, 1940, in Lagos, Nigeria. He grew up in a musical environment, influenced by traditional Yoruba music. Allen's early career began in the 1950s when he played with various highlife bands in Nigeria. His unique approach to rhythm, incorporating African rhythms with jazz and funk, quickly set him apart. In 1960, he joined Fela Kuti's band, Koola Lobitos, which marked the beginning of an extraordinary partnership that would redefine African music for decades to come. As a member of the Africa '70 band, Tony Allen contributed significantly to Fela Kuti's groundbreaking albums such as "Zombie" (1976) and "Expensive Shit" (1975). His complex drumming style became a key characteristic of the Afrobeat sound, blending African polyrhythms with jazz improvisation. Allen's proficiency and innovation brought him recognition beyond Africa, leading to collaborations with international artists such as Damon Albarn and Jeff Mills.
