Biography

Tariq Luqmaan Trotter, known professionally as Black Thought, was born in Philadelphia in 1971. He began his artistry in the local hip-hop scene, where he quickly developed a reputation as a formidable lyricist and vocalist. Raised in a culturally diverse environment, Trotter's early exposure to music played a significant role in shaping his sound. He was influenced by his father's passion for jazz, which helped cultivate his appreciation for rhythm and wordplay, leading him to form the roots of what would become his illustrious career in music. Trotter gained major recognition as the frontman of the legendary hip-hop band The Roots, which he co-founded in 1987. The band rose to prominence in the 1990s, securing critical acclaim with albums such as "Things Fall Apart" and "Phrenology." Their unique blend of live instrumentation and insightful lyrics won numerous awards, including a Grammy for Best Rap Album.
