Ronny Montrose was born on November 24, 1947, in San Francisco, California, and he began playing guitar at an early age. Montrose's career took a significant turn in the early 1970s when he joined the band Moby Grape and later collaborated with various artists. However, it was his involvement in the formation of the band Montrose in 1973 that marked the beginning of his substantial contributions to rock music. The self-titled debut album 'Montrose' featured the classic track 'Rock Candy,' which helped establish the band's reputation and solidify Montrose as a leading guitarist in the genre. In the following years, Montrose gained further recognition for his work with the iconic lead vocalist Sammy Hagar.
