Rebecca Gates emerged as a vital force in the indie rock scene during the 1990s, initially gaining recognition as the frontwoman of the critically acclaimed band The Spinanes. Born in the Pacific Northwest, Gates developed her musical talents at a young age, influenced by the rich musical landscape around her. After relocating to Portland, Oregon, she formed The Spinanes in 1991 with drummer Scott Plouf. The band's distinctive sound, characterized by Gates' introspective songwriting and unique guitar work, quickly garnered attention, leading to their debut album, 'Manos', released in 1993. Her early career was marked by a commitment to authenticity and a strong DIY ethos that resonated with audiences and set the stage for her future projects.
