Born Dante Terrell Smith on December 11, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York, Mos Def emerged as a multi-talented artist whose contributions to hip hop, acting, and activism have left an indelible mark on contemporary culture. His career began in the early 1990s with the group Urban Thermo Dynamics, where he honed his skills alongside his siblings. The group's underground success paved the way for Mos Def to pursue a solo career, where he quickly gained recognition for his intelligent wordplay and socially conscious themes.
