Isaiah 'Ikey' Owens was born on December 1, 1975, and hails from the vibrant music city of Long Beach, California. From an early age, he showed an affinity for music, famously learning the piano at the age of three. His musical education was deeply enriched by his exposure to the eclectic sounds of the West Coast punk and ska scenes that dominated his youth. Owens embraced various musical influences, from jazz to Latin music, which would later play a significant role in shaping his unique style and approach to keyboard instrumentation. As a prodigious talent, he was soon immersed in the local music scene, laying the foundational stones for a remarkable career that would span genres and generations. Owens's career took off in the early 2000s when he became a vital member of the post-hardcore band The Mars Volta, contributing to their groundbreaking sound from 2001 until their breakup in 2010. His innovative keyboard work and improvisational skills played a critical role in the band's success, featuring on several albums that received critical acclaim. Aside from The Mars Volta, he was also part of bands such as Free Moral Agents, a project he founded that explored a more avant-garde musical direction, and De Facto, which blended Latin rhythms with rock elements.
