Dave Grohl was born January 14, 1969, in Warren, Ohio, and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, where he absorbed a wide range of music—from the melodic hard rock of the 70s to the blistering speed of 80s punk. He began playing guitar and drums as a teen and quickly became active in the late-1980s hardcore scene. In the mid-1980s he joined the Washington, D.C. band Scream as a drummer, touring and recording with them; this experience sharpened his sense of rhythm, arrangement, and onstage energy.
